Easy Chairs from Michael Puryear
Visit Their SiteMichael Puryear’s handmade chairs have nice lines and offer profound comfort. The buttery leather cushions manage to relieve tension while simultaneously supporting the optimistic sense that it would be easy to get up and get something done. Not an easy balance to strike. (La-Z-Boy hasn’t figured it out yet.) A photographer in his former life, Puryear is a self-taught furniture designer. Puryear designs and constructs custom furniture from a workshop on his property in Shokan. His work has been widely exhibited in galleries and museum collections, and he teaches his craft at art schools, including SUNY Purchase, where he is an associate professor of woodworking. He credits many aesthetic influences, including Shaker and Scandinavian design, and the cultures of Japan and Africa.
