Kingston-based ceramicist Kathy Erteman approaches her art by combining a reductive modernist concept and traditional techniques. In this way, her work is both abstract and natural, and she is able to embrace the surprises and challenges inherent in working with clay. “The essence of my ceramic work is restrained minimal form, activated by surface treatment,” Erteman says. Using her hands to perform a delicate dance between control and chance, she creates vessels that are at once soft and rigid, spare in form and rich in texture.
