Do you yearn for a spoon to stir the soul as well as the pot? Blackcreek Mercantile & Trading Co. is the Kingston-based workshop of Joshua Vogel and Kelly Zaneto. Their hand-turned kitchen tools and sculptural objects are likely the most inspiring you’ve ever seen. Using wood gathered in the Hudson Valley, especially cherry and sugar maple, they fashion unique biomorphic kitchen tools. Vogel has been carving wood and fashioning furniture, sculpture, and objects since he was a boy whittling sticks with a pocket knife. Now his technique is more sophisticated—he uses a lathe to turn wood in a freeform process, beginning with wet wood, and slowly refining the pieces over months as the wood dries.
